“[DeLaval Dairy Service – Michigan] was a big part of the reason that we were comfortable going DeLaval, and they have been an outstanding dealership. They have great service people, and I believe their installation people are second to none.” – Bryant Trierweiler

The Trierweiler family, which has dairy farmed for more than 150-years in Michigan, understands the value of changing with the times. In 2018, their dairy, TDI Farms, began milking 1,500 cows in what was, at the time, one of the largest robotic milking facilities in the U.S. with 24 DeLaval VMS. Additionally, they use DeLaval Activity to monitor their cows and have twenty-four swinging cow brushes.

The robots, divided equally between four naturally ventilated freestall barns, are set up in a “tollbooth” configuration using a guided, milk-first traffic system to move cows through the VMS. After doing a lot of research on cow traffic for robotic milking systems, Bryant Trierweler, co-owner said, “Guided was the way for us to save a bunch of labor and let the gates do the work for us.”

Besides having to add minimal labor to help run their robotic barn, Bryant noted greater cow comfort, better hoof health and improvements to their reproduction program since startup of the automated facility. He continued: “The overall cow demeanor and flow has been really good for the cows. The laid back environment has also been good for the people who work here.”

Average milk production per lbs/day at TDI Farms’ robot barns is in the mid- to high-90s with their goal being to harvest as much milk per box possible with the optimal number of cows. “We’re quite honestly still figuring that number out,” admitted Bryant.

Teat preparation was an important reason why his family decided to buy DeLaval robots. The average somatic cell count of their robotic herd is under 100,000. “We have a lot of that to owe to the superior teat prep system,” he confirmed.

The Trierweilers, who also milk a third of their 3,300 cows in two conventional parlors, continue to rely on DeLaval Dairy Service – Michigan to support their facilities with consumables and scheduled service for the robots.
