New teat dip launched
DeLaval has launched a new teat dip with a formic acid active. FormaShield™ is a concentrated liquid teat disinfectant that can be diluted and applied to lactating cows before and after milking. By using an acid based active ingredient, FormaShield will not leave potentially harmful chlorate residues and it also has high levels of emollients for good skin conditioning. DeLaval product specialist, Lisa Harris, said:
“FormaShield is a new way to help reduce herd mastitis, improve cow health and increase milk yields. Annually, 1 in 4 Irish cows is affected by subclinical mastitis and 1 in 5 show signs of clinical mastitis. Our hope is that FormaShield will be used to reduce these ratios and improve cow health throughout Ireland.”
FormaShield has a striking orange colour, making it easy to identify following application. This also differentiates it from other sprays and liquids commonly used in parlours. The formulation incorporates a glycerin emollient to hydrate and soften teat skin, making it healthier and smoother.
“By keeping the skin smooth and in peak condition, users will lower the risk of bacteria colonising teats which will reduce the risk of mastitis cases. Improvements in teat health will lead to cows milking faster with a higher throughput and less stress,” she added.
FormaShield can be used as a traditional dip, or as a spray. This makes it easier to integrate into any milking parlour and it is approved to use with any DeLaval spray equipment. The dilution is 25%, which also makes the product economical to use and compact to store.
“FormaShield joins a comprehensive portfolio of existing teat dips offered by DeLaval. It is our hope that it will become a ‘go to’ for many farmers looking to reduce mastitis cases,” she concludes.
