DeLaval launches new teat disinfectants
Two new glycolic acid-based teat disinfectants; OceanBlu™ spray, and OceanBlu™ barrier have been launched by DeLaval.
DeLaval has expanded its udder health range with two new teat disinfectants containing glycolic acid in a unique GlyTec formulation which can reduce somatic cell counts and the threat of mastitis, whilst also improving udder skin condition.
The OceanBlu™ range includes a spray and a barrier which offer protection to dairy units using any type of milking equipment. Both products have a vivid blue colour to show which cows have been sprayed and dipped. DeLaval’s pilot farm test results fed back a visibility score of 91% for the dip, and a hit rate of 98% for the disinfectant spray, demonstrating both products are both easy to identify and apply.
OceanBlu™ products contain glycerin and sorbitol emollients which improve skin condition. In addition, the products contain patented GlyTec technology, a form of glycolic acid, with efficacious disinfection properties that are not reliant on iodine.
Glycolic acid is organic and naturally occurring in some fruit, vegetables and in milk. It is used in human skin care products and DeLaval has harnessed similar skin conditioning benefits to improve teat health. In tests, teats showed improvements in skin condition after two weeks. After eight weeks, 91% of teats had a score 1 indicating smooth & supple teats, which represented an improvement of 53% on the pilot farm.
Whilst the products have been designed to be used with automated systems such as the DeLaval VMS robot or teat spray robot (TSR) the spray can be applied using a handheld spray bottle and the teat dip can also be manually applied.
OceanBlu™ barrier is a vibrant blue teat dip that forms a high-quality flexible barrier around the teat, protecting cows from environmental mastitis-causing pathogens between milking. Tests on pilot farms showed 75% persistency after four hours.
OceanBlu™ spray is a multi-purpose product that can be sprayed before and after milking and can also be foamed pre-milking during the udder preparation routine. It is a fast-acting disinfectant with a bright blue colour, making it easy to see which cows have been sprayed.
